Cathryn Reher joined Barna, Guzy & Steffen in 2021 as a Shareholder with more than 33 years of experience. She utilizes detailed estate and long-term care planning analysis to advocate for clients in elder law and special needs planning. Cathryn is also certified in federal veterans benefits and since 1993, has helped clients with Veterans Homes planning.
There are few practicing attorneys with more years of experience than Cathryn in Elder Law and Special Needs Planning. Her years of involvement with federal and state law changes allows her clients unparalleled insights into how to qualify for government benefits and has a pulse on potential upcoming policy changes that may impact eligibility. Since 2001, she has served as a co-editor of the MSBA Elder Law Handbook which is the premier practice resource for attorneys. She shares her knowledge by serving as faculty and presenter for MSBA Continuing Legal Education courses, Chairs the Education Committee and VA Rules Committee and is a long-standing member of the Legislative Committee for the MSBA Elder Law Section. She has been a member of the Elder Law Council for more than twenty years, past chair of the Medical Assistance Committee and is a long-term member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (both national and State Chapter). Cathryn has been a Super Lawyer continuously since 2001, past recipient of the Mary Alice Gooderl award and inducted into the MSBA Elder Law Section Hall of Fame in 2019. She is committed to serving all clients in need, including the LGBTQ+ community.
Outside of practice, Cathryn enjoys traveling and biking. She and her family are also enthusiastic – and competitive – about professional soccer. She is a passionate chef and gardener, whose favorite flowers are the brilliant orange Trollius (globeflower) and spiny sea holly. A reading enthusiast, Cathryn highly recommends Joan Didion’s book “The Year of Magical Thinking” because of its valuable insights on coping with loss.
