BGS Attorney Dave Schaps Presents Award at Roseville Area Optimist Club

November 13, 2017  |  Barna, Guzy & Steffen, Ltd.

BGS Attorney Dave Schaps  presented the Roseville Area Optimist Club’s inaugural “Optimist of the Year” award to Club President Don Salverda at the November 3rd Club meeting. Salverda is a former Ramsey County Commissioner from the Roseville Area and President of Don Salverda and Associates, a personal and professional leadership consulting firm.   Both Dave and Don are founding members of the Roseville Area Optimist Club, and worked to charter the organization in January.  The purpose of the club is to be a friend of local area kids by promoting activities that bring out the best in ourselves, the community and in our youth.  The 10 member  Optimist Club board, of which Dave serves as the Club Secretary, unanimously agreed that Salverda should receive the first award due to his great work in building the Club to almost 70 members in eleven short months.   This accomplishment was truly a feat warranting recognition.  The Club meets for a networking lunch and to hear a speaker on the second Friday of every month at the Roseville Radisson. There are over 1500 Optimist Clubs world wide  and 23 in Minnesota. The Roseville Club is made up of a number of people including  leaders in business, local government and local non-profit groups.  For questions about this article or…

The Unknown Hero (Eaters)

July 6, 2017  |  Barna, Guzy & Steffen, Ltd.

The July 4 holiday has also become known as the Super Bowl of eating with the Nathan’s hot dog eating contest. These contest winners receive fame and fortune to go with their impressively expandable stomachs. But there is an anonymous collection of individuals that move through life without fanfare or profit in their chosen pursuit – these are the marathon eaters. Today, July 6, 2017, Barna, Guzy & Steffen’s own marathon eater Scott Lepak finished his 8 month quest to eat all 31 sandwiches on the Nelson Cheese and Deli menu in Spring Lake Park, Minnesota. When asked why he decided to tackle all of the sandwiches on the menu, Scott said “When I started going here in 1991, I had a Hero no onion once a week every week for two years. I figured I was in a slump by then so I switched to the Mr. T (turkey on a French roll with Baby Swiss, onion, sprouts, guacamole and bacon Dijon mayo). I had one of those once a week every week for the next year. I generally have stayed with the same four over 25 years but decided the other ones looked pretty good so I thought I needed to branch out. Last November, I wondered if anyone had ever…

BGS Participates in MTA's Trucks and Toys 2016 Event

December 13, 2016  |  Carole Clark Isakson

The BGS Transportation Law Department is carrying on the tradition of involvement with a great cause – the Minnesota Trucking Association (MTA) Trucks and Toys event. This event provides toys for disadvantaged children and teens all over the state of Minnesota, through the efforts of MTA members like BGS. This year BGS attorneys and staff enthusiastically jumped in to the shopping challenge, and even helped load a truck! The MTA has been running this event for more than 20 years, and this year twenty three MTA members around the state collected toys and cash (used to buy more toys). The MTA coordinates with many charities throughout the state, and this year partnered with even more groups to donate even more toys. Here in the metro area, the MTA donated toys to Kinship in Fridley, People Serving People in Minneapolis and Harriet Tubman Foundation in Minneapolis. BGS personnel took part in the event on a more direct level. On Friday night December 2, BGS staff Jackie Campbell and Marly Gullekson (and Marly’s daughters and grandkids!) had a great time helping shop at the Blaine Target, where they helped the MTA purchase more than $13,000 of toys. Bright and early the next morning, and fueled by coffee and hot chocolate, assistant Jackie Campbell and attorneys…
