Back to School with the Right Tools
September 10, 2013 | Barna, Guzy & Steffen, Ltd.For several years now Barna, Guzy & Steffen has coordinated an annual Back to School supply event in August and delivered the donated supplies to an area elementary school. This year, the firm donated supplies to Hamilton Elementary in Coon Rapids. “Donating school supplies is a way each of us can help give back directly within our community,” said Family Law attorney Beverly Dodge, who coordinated the event. She said that “the kids receiving these supplies might not otherwise have some of the basic necessities for back to school, let alone the “extras” that our own children take for granted. This contrast creates problems for their success in school.” Items donated by staff and attorneys included all the basics like crayons, markers, folders, backpacks, and more. The firm also made a monetary donation with which Bev purchased even more supplies. The firm brought the donations to Hamilton Elementary the week before school began and kids were given access to materials they might not have otherwise had to start this new school year.

The firm now known as Barna, Guzy & Steffen was founded by the Honorable Joseph E. Wargo, who graduated from the University of MN law school in 1938 and founded the law firm that same year. Wargo grew up in Columbia Heights and started his practice in that area. He was joined by Peter Barna in 1952 and by Robert Guzy in 1958. Wargo left the firm in 1968 to serve as a Judge for 11 years on the Anoka County Bench. Over the years, BGS has proudly advanced 11 of its attorneys to become judges in Anoka County. In 1990 the law firm merged its practice with Steffen Munstenteiger and the firm became known as Barna, Guzy & Steffen. Seventy five years of dedication and experience has helped fuel the firm’s growth and expanded practice areas. With 30 attorneys and more than 60 staff members, Barna, Guzy & Steffen is the largest private law firm in Anoka County today. August 21, 2013 | Barna, Guzy & Steffen, Ltd.Stable Pathways, a program that provides horse-assisted activities for people living with cognitive and physical challenges, is hosting a benefit gala for fundraising. BGS’ Legal Administrative Assistant Sarah Thies is on the Board of Directors and helped organize the event. Barna, Guzy & Steffen is also a sponsor of the event. The fundraiser will take place Saturday, September 21st, 2013 beginning at 6:30 with Cocktails. Food, a program demonstration, and dancing with live music will follow. This is a western themed event so the suggested dress is Cowboy Casual – Rhinestones Optional! Tickets to the event are $35 with proceeds going to promote Stable Pathways’ missions. Stable Pathways is located at Bunker Park Stables in Coon Rapids. It provides equine-assisted activities for people living with physical and cognitive challenges under the careful direction of either a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) International Certified Instructor or a Minnesota licensed Occupational Therapist. Sarah says that therapeutic horseback riding helps riders “organize” body and brain. The horse’s gait is most similar to a human gait so riding provides a connection to a natural rhythmic movement from the horse that stimulated the rider’s body and brain.
